OK, this is definitely related to the additional Ubuntu installation -- hibernate was working fine before, and I haven't installed a new kernel in this Jaunty installation. Somehow the repartitioning has messed things up.
I have tried restoring the grub installation (since the Hardy install put its own one in), and that made no difference. Is it possible that the hibernate/resume is trying to use the wrong swap partition to save/restore the state, or something like that? What do I need to fix up to get hibernate/resume working again? I can't even work out what method Ubuntu uses for hibernate, which would give me some clues to find out what needs restoring. (The only other strange thing I have noticed is that when booting up, I no longer get a graphical boot up screen for the whole time (with 'kubuntu' and the progress bar) -- it now switches quite early to showing me all the details in text.
