At the time I was using a default ubuntu 8.10 installation with the nmapplet utility that comes out of the box.
I subsequently had a look into this, and whiile I can no longer remember the exact details, I believe I discovered that the wireless chipset that came with the Thinkpad X31 had only very basic support in Linux. I subsequently upgraded the internal Mini PCI card with a cheap replacement that I well supported under Linux, and have had no problems since. For anyone else that wishes to do this, it's worth noting that out of the box, Thinkpads are somewhat crippled, and don't let you plug in unauthorized cards. I had to use a program called no1802 to flick a bios setting which disables this check. I used a small Linux C program I found.
