Asked myself why the LiveCD PulseAudio and OSS would work and regular pulseaudio stopped... hmm...
Installed console mode alsamixer. All controls were gone accept the Master control which seems to be alsa front:0. It was dead on zero. I turned it up... Working again! Anyone have a clue how this got to zero? Status bar Volume Contro for Master, PCM, and Front for HDA Intel (Alsa mixer) were all at good levels. The one labeled Playback ASLA PCM on front:0 vi DMA (PulseAudio Mixer) was the one turned down all the way...
