After a lot of googling, it turns out that the problem is apparently a bug on the server side (version 3.0.24). Bug #286828 has a workaround: add the "nodfs" mount option on the client. This worked for me. Another workaround mentioned is adding "msdfs root = no" to /etc/smb/conf on the server, which I didn't try.
