You should run slapd -h 'ldap://127.0.0.1:389/ ldaps:/// ldapi:///' -g openldap -u openldap -F /etc/ldap/slapd.d/ -d any this runs slapd in debug mode in foreground. If something is wrong slapd will post out error messages at the end.
