** Description changed: + UPDATE: + I may have located my problem. After I rebooted, I opened the system log to try and see if anything odd was happening right before it froze. The only entries were of a MAC address conflict, and that the new MAC address didn't match the previous one, and the system encountered an error. + The reason I think this happened is that I am not using the ethernet port on the motherboard, instead I am using a USB 802.11g wireless adapter(Belkin). The system log was showing the MAC address of the USB adapter as the previous one and that is was conflicting with the new MAC address which appeared to be motherboards ethernet port. + + What I did or now do to prevent a freeze, is when I am finished using the computer/internet, I disable the wireless and make sure the light on the USB adapter turns off. + Now when the screen saver kicks in and runs for hours(have left on overnight without trouble) the unit does not freeze, and as soon as I touch the mouse the unit goes back to the desktop. + Then when I need to use the internet, I just enable the wireless adapter. + + I'm still not sure if the problem was due to a conflict in Ubuntu or if + someone was outside the apartment complex 'wardriving', but there are + about 6 other wireless networks in the complex that use similar + encryption...which leads me to believe that there is a lot of wireless + network confusion going on, but like I said earlier, as long as I + disable the wireless when I'm done using the computer, it wont freeze + when left sitting idle. + + PREVIOUS: I am using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS After the computer sits idle for awhile, the screen saver will disappear and the system locks up / freezes, and the caps lights on the keyboard flashes. Nothing will get it going again, I have to power down and reboot. THis only happens if the system has been sitting idle after the screen saver has kicked in, I haven't had it freeze while using the machine (i.e. I move the mouse while the screen saver is still active and it goes back to the desktop and all is well), This has happened almost every time I have left the computer alone for more than an hour or two. If I get into the habit of shutting down after each time I use the computer, this wouldn't be a problem, but there will be times when I need to download something of significant size and the leave the computer and this problem will get in the way. This may be a power management issue, I'm not sure, but am looking for other people who have had similar problems so that this may be fixed..........other than this problem, I have had great success with Ubuntu, and it has served me well.
