Public bug reported:

With an updated Kubuntu 8.10 when running "xset dpms force off"
sometimes the backlight stays on, and sometimes the backlight goes off
for 2 seconds, and after that the backlight turns on again. Also
configuring the "Power Control" under "Display" in "System Settings"
from KDE 4.2 doesn't work, the backlight remains on.

With "sleep 1; xset s activate" nothing happens, but the second time it
works. And only with "xset s activate" the backlight doesn't turn off.

"sudo vbetool dpms off" works only the first time, the next time it
doesn't make anything.
