same here.

linux-image-2.6.28-8-generic = heavy payload on my "dell xps 400 - intel
pentum d" running jaunty on an encrypted lvm group (luks & lvm2)

i noticed that boot up was extremely slow - and also during single mode,
on 2nd stage it hanged for over a minute waiting for nvidia-glx (180) to
start.

the desktop was also extremely slow and both the cpu cores were jumping around 
within 65% - 85% to 100% usage.
i didn't see any one process hogging all the cpu, it just seemed that any 
active process like just a simple "sudo apt-get update" would force the cores 
at 100% and so on...
