Public bug reported: Installing Ubuntu 8.10 on an eMachines H3256 first produces only a 800x600 display. The LiveCD shows the same thing.
I tried installing nvidia-graphics-driver-96 (96.43.09-0ubuntu1.1) first through 'jockey-gtk' and then through 'envyng' after a reboot. Both recommend nvidia 96 and both create an error on boot up: "Low graphics mode". Now surprisingly, when you click "Use low graphics mode", it actually uses 1280x1024, but the nvidia driver is not enabled. When you disable the nvidia driver, is falls back to 800x600 as it was when Ubuntu was first installed.
