I believe the problem was due to a mismatch in versions between the
linux-headers and linux-image causing issues with the xerver-xorg not
being able to properly install accelerated graphic drivers.
So I removed all the nvidia-glx* packages and the dependencies,
including fakeroot, and the corrupted linux-headers. Then i did a sudo
apt-get autoremove and then sudo apt-get linux-headers-$(uname -r) and
then reinstalled the latest nvidia-glx.
accelerated drivers worked as well as gdm once again..
