I also suffer from this bug. I have never had any problems with 8.04LTS. With version 8.10 (full patched) I get connected and disconnected only when I receive files using samba (over LAN).
I never get disconnected when receiving (large) file from the internet. Only samba makes my nic power on and off all the time. I don't even have compiz installed so I guess it has nothing to to with the b44 driver problem...
