Hi Nick, First thing to check - have you ever had the -fglrx driver installed? If so, leftover bits can sometimes cause problems like these. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver for directions on removing it completely.
