Have you tried turning up the mic/line boost options? Have you also made
sure that the microphone or line in device you are attempting to record
from are enabled for capture? You can do this by running alsamixer,
pressing F4 to switch to capture settings, finding teh line/mic device
you want to enable, and pressing space bar to enable capturing audio.

It appears that the jaunty kernel should support your hadware properly,
which is why I am asking the above question.
