added: Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" to /etc/X11/xorg.conf as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/UxaTesting ran X :2 video mode changes to what I'd expect it to be, but stays black and system goes no further lspci -nn reports: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82G965 Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:29a2] (rev 02) not sure what else is helpful and isn't automatically included!
