I can put off the freeze by switching to a text console immediately
after waking up. However, the freeze happens as soon as I switch back to
virtual console 7. This make me suspect it's a graphics issue.

Another strange thing: my Gnome desktop comes up unlocked after waking
up, I thought it ought to be password-protected.

The Alt+SysRq magic works somewhat after a freeze: I can achieve a clean
reboot by keying "reisub" but I cannot use 'o' to turn off the system or
'k' to kill all process on the current virtual console.
