Have you tried using a conventional set of headphones plugging into the "headphone out" socket that is connected to your sound card?
My sound has also just stopped working; rebooted this morning for the first time in a few days, and now it just crackles when the system tries to play something. Could've been a change in the last 3-5 days as I've not rebooted too often this week. Am running an HP Pavilion DV3507 laptop that has not had any sound problems previously.
