Sorry, I thought I was clear about the version when I said I was using the latest Jaunty. I am using Dolphin 1.2/KDE 4.2.0.
I also wasn't sure if I was supposed to mark this as a problem in the Dolphin package as I thought it might be somewhere else in KDE. The problem is reproducible on this system. My other jaunty system is sick at the moment so I cannot test it. I have not used Ubuntu prior to this so I cannot speak to performance in earlier versions.
