Public bug reported: After upgrading to intrepid, my Thinkpad R52's hardware mute button and volume down button do not behave as expected.
The mute button does not mute the volume. Instead, it locks the screen. Volume down lowers the volume, but it will also stop any audio/video playing in a media player. The Blue Access IBM button does nothing. I think more details were reported on the ubuntu bugs mailing list by another user, but I don't think a bug was ever created.
