Back to Intrepid, this time I had to reboot twice, as the first attempt resulted in a failure in starting the X server with the vesa driver (see attached Xorg.failsafe.log). The splash screen slowly faded and then the monitor turned blank. No kernel panic occurred, though, and I could restart by hitting [ctrl-alt-del].
I am eager to hear news about a possible fix or work around.
