Michael. I ran a memtest via the Ubuntu 8.04 CD I have for a short while (i'm afraid I got rather bored after a while and quit).
Unfortunately I do not know how to undertake a file system test. I tried switching to the main server (in Software Sources). It would recognise the updates applicable in my installation (58). It goes to download them and then the following error occurs (screenshot of update manager attached). I'm sorely tempted to delete and reinstall again.
