I've been bitten by this bug as well (Intel x3100 on Thinkpad T61), and the error message Noel pasted was what I saw when trying to run 'pulseaudio -k' too. I took the hint from the error and ran:
sudo adduser <my_username> pulse-rt After logging out/back in, audio works fine.
