I had similar symptoms in Edgy. My X40 was failing to resume, with the symptoms given in the original description, about one time in 20. (I didn't try the various SysRq keys.) Insertion of logging into the resume script showed that the problem was with POST_VIDEO. After a lot of fiddling about, I commented out POST_VIDEO = true in /etc/default/acpi- support and this has both fixed the problem and caused resume to be somewhat faster.
