For me, it turns out that of the myriad audio problems people have reported, Bug 315971 is what I had to address (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/315971/comments/15). Basically, the speakers were disabled and needed to be re-enabled.
