Ok, so my issue is resolved. When trying to give my sound a try last night I managed to fix it. By adding the line options snd-hda-intel model=acer to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and restarted. Then I had to give myself rights to use audio in the Users and Groups configuration utility.
