OK, I've tonight finally figured out what the problem is, and it's not to do with Firefox on Ubuntu, fortunately, but rather there's some odd MTU issue on my local network/my router (DLink DSL G604T) and ISP. (I did a test from a VM on one of my boxes which routes via the host box which also uses a reduced MTU (which was originally done to correct network connectivity issues as well, quite some time ago) and lo and behold the test page worked. I had not previously considered that the MTU might be the problem because the MTU on Windows (on the problem machine) looked the same as the one used by Ubuntu (e.g. 1500), which therefore seemed to rule out MTU as the culprit. But, suffice it to say, after finding the VM working, I then decided to retry on the problem box, first without setting the MTU thus leaving it at 1500 (as expected it failed), and reducing it to match my server box's, at which point it worked flawlessly.
