Are all the accounts on the same server (except for your GMail account obviously)? I may not have enough servers/accounts available to test this with properly, but with five accounts across two servers (one server, three accounts, is GMail) it takes almost no time at all, even with 40+ new messages to download.
Your spell check issue sounds very similar to this bug (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=469369) reported to Mozilla.
