Suspecting a problem related to  the 64 architecture, I tested on a 32 bit 
intel machine.
tulip also crashed, although after dispaying the splash screen and (very) 
briefly an application window.

$ uname  -a
Linux 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Wed Jan 28 00:02:01 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

$ tulip
Segmentation fault
