@Atilla -- thanks for all that information.
@David -- yes clearly espeak should be using ALSA directly and that
should be changed whatever happens. However the main issue here is that
the OSS modules no longer get loaded, which seems to have changed from
Intrepid to Jaunty. That latter needs investigating whatever the
outcome for espeak.

In Jaunty Alpha3 release 32 bit and 64 bit versions the sound is not work.
