allonewords comments were the thing that fixed this for me.

suddenly after months of correct operation my external usb drive
wouldn't mount.

it was after I'd been playing with a sata CDROM drive. Quick look in
fstab revealed that the (now removed) cdrom was fouling up the mount
location for the external usb hard drive: viz:

/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0 0

commenting that out got me back to loving linux (and it's superb helpful
community) as usual!
