Public bug reported:

All applications I've tried (Gedit, Terminal, Firefox, Gimp, Epiphany,
Gnometris, Gxine, Calculator and more..) take from 5 to 15 seconds to
appear once I launch them. Before launching the app, the system shows
4-6% cpu usage. Upon launching, the usage goes up to 100% for about 5 to
15 seconds and stays at 100% until the app appears and then it falls
back down to 4-10%. This has been the case since I've installed Dapper
(a fresh install). Once the apps are running, they appear to function
normally although dialog boxes launched from menus seem a little
sluggish to appear (1 to 2 seconds). Applications close quickly and menu
selection from the panels appears fluid.

I am currently getting a HAL initialization failure upon bootup as well,
although this doesn't seem to be affecting any other behaviour of the
system. Although I guess it might be related. I know there are several
bug reports dealing with this issue - it still seems unresolved.

My system is not that old. I think Dapper should be running much quicker
than it is. It is *much* less responsive than XP on this machine.

My system specs are as follows:

P4 - 2.93 GHz
1GB ram
Kernel - 2.6.15-26-686 (just upgraded with no effect on the above behaviour)
Video - Intel 915G chipset on-board graphics
Sound - Realtek (ALSA)
HDrives - 2- 160GB (1 SATA, 1 IDE)

This is my first bug report, I'm not sure if I should be including other
information in my post. Please let me know of any missing information
that might help.
