This is an update of the original report. I ran 2 nights with compression turned off, and no errors. Everything ran to completion. I turned compression back on last night, and it also ran to completion. So it must be a transient error triggered by changes in one or more files.
Also, I was wrong about the verbose logging. There are 2 logs generated by the backup script.
