A friend with a Windows laptop was using the network - he didn't want to install an SSH client (work laptop), but could ping from the command line as that functionality is built-in. The laptop was on a wireless connection - I'll have another try using a wired connection when I can get my hands on another machine (on which I can install an SSH client). I'll also fill in the kernel bug info when I get some time tomorrow.
