Commenting out kopt (with ##) and having grub use UUID instead of
devices names doesn't help.

What however did help was downgrading the kernel to the one in edgy
(instead edgy security) AND installing a working initramfs image from
another machine so I'm beginning to think there's initramfs image
breakage of some sort.

Might be related to #75649 which reports a bug.  I will now apply that
patch and rebuild the initram image of the updated kernel.
