I have exactly the same issue. I'm also using Ubuntu 8.10 (the 64 bit
version). I've found that the error occurs because /dev/lirc0 doesn't
exist:

wel...@rosebud:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/lirc restart

I'm using an Imon VFD / IR receiver. Output from lsusb:
