I'm having the same problem!

I've tried lots of things without really knowing that much about the
cups printing system. I think somebody who does would fix this in no
time.

The closest I've gotten to success was when I tried the open printer driver and
the instructions here:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Brother-QL-500

I can then print a test page (looks a bit weired though). But when I try
to print a text to it I just get some line feeds. I tried printing a
large text and then I get just some words from the middle of the page.

I've also tried the printer drivers from Brother but I can't get them properly
installed. They have a deb for Debian Sarge 3.1 but the directory structure
seems changed. I've tried with the instructions here also with no success..
