I would like to second this. Recently, I installed Kubuntu Edgy on a machine which had Gentoo on it up until then, and a collegue installed Ubuntu Edgy on his former Mandriva machine. In both cases, we initially tried to install without removing the old distribution, then we tried removing everything except /root and /home, and finally we had to reformat the partition in order to install.
The symptoms were as described above.
