I would like to second this. Recently, I installed Kubuntu Edgy on a
machine which had Gentoo on it up until then, and a collegue installed
Ubuntu Edgy on his former Mandriva machine. In both cases, we initially
tried to install without removing the old distribution, then we tried
removing everything except /root and /home, and finally we had to
reformat the partition in order to install.

The symptoms were as described above. It would be nice to be able to
cleanly switch another Linux distro to Ubuntu.
