I think that all the problems of sound can be resolved reading this forum post 
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=616845 . The developers should be 
aware of that, i think.
one more think: test if your headphones works well and if the sound of speakers 
stop when the headphones are plugged in.
for me the words that worked were "sony-assamd" "fujitsu" "basic" and "auto" 
but the "sony-assamd" was the one with better results :) i'm in ubuntustudio 
64bits so i dont know if that is the best solution for 32bits OS.
Your welcome kyle. one thing that isnt related to sound, is your wireless 
working on that sony vaio?
i cant seem to put mine working...i'm frusted... the wired net works great
