I have been able make the mga-driver work. However, nothing changed with the mathematica problem. I attached my new xorg.conf. I have also found at least two people here http://forums.wolfram.com/student- support/topics/17380 and one guy here http://forums.wolfram.com/mathgroup/archive/2008/Mar/msg00508.html who face(d) exactly the same problem on earlier ubuntu versions. I also tried this update http://support.wolfram.com/technotes/updatesforubuntu.html, however, to no avail.
