I was plagued by this problem too on my new HP laptop + found that
reverting my NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver from version 177 to 173
helped.

Before I did this, about 75% of the times I logged in, Xorg would be
taking 100% of cpu right away. This was temporarily solved by pressing
ctrl-alt-F1 to switch to a text console, then going back to graphics by
pressing alt-F7. However, in a few moments, Xorg went back to 100% cpu.

Since I switched to version 173, I still occasionally get Xorg taking
100% when I log in, but much less frequently, and when I do, the ctrl-
alt-F1/alt-F7 trick fixes it permanently. I'm too scared to try
switching back to version 177 to confirm that this was causing the
problem. I haven't noticed any disadvantages to version 173.

Laptop: HP HDX Premium Series
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

Hope this helps.
