Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xscreensaver-gl
I returned to my laptop after several minutes and the Polytopes screensaver was moving normally. I did not press shift or any other key to clear the screensaver. Instead, I began typing my password. At about the first letter of the password, the display froze at a Polytopes image and the computer was completely unresponsive. Even ctrl-alt-F1 did not respond. This happened two times. Most of the time this same procedure works properly, even though I almost always begin with the first letter of my password (rather than shift or ctrl). On both occasions when the screen froze, I was lucky and the computer was networked with another computer and I was able to ssh in to the computer with the locked screen. Running 'top' showed that the process 'polytopes' was using 100% CPU. I was able to recover my open documents with a simple 'killall polytopes', but if I had not been able to ssh into the computer, a hard reset would have been necessary.
