while knowing very little about X, I think in general, it would be nice if pixmaps were associated with the process that requested them (maybe by just having the process associate a constant label with the pixmaps it uses). then it would be possible to write a utility named pixmaptop and also to cleanup pixmaps (even if not automatically, at least manually), and also to have something like sar to show usage trends (memory leaks)
