I found that my gnome-settings-daemon crashed on startup when I had my old ~/.config/monitor.xml file in place. When I renamed ~/.config/monitor.xml to ~/.config/monitor.xml-old and restarted the daemon it started without a problem. My monitor.xml file had two monitors in it, perhaps because I sometimes use a docking station with my laptop, but it was not connected when I was experiencing the crash.
