I get this exact same error. I'm running Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit, fglrx with an HD3870X2 video card.
Perhaps noteworthy, I have everything in amdcccle turned all the way up (dunno if xvidcap uses OpenGL or not, or even if it did if that's relevant info...)
