That's correct. Since 8.04 is LTS, one should release a fix for it.
What is observed, however, was an advertised MSS of 1440 by TCP
not anything larger. Is your communication happening locally
within your machine (e.g., between host and vmware boxes?).
Did you Wireshark/TCPDUMP your TCP connection setups?
