I can now solve the problem by first saving the /etcX11/xorg.conf file created with some trouble in Heron to an USB-stick. Start Ububtu DVD in Safe graphics mode and replace the xorg.conf file with the one from Heron. After Ctrl-Alt-Backspace the resolution of the screen is appropriate.
