I have tried Intrepid Ibex with kernel 2.6.27-9 but the at76_usb driver still freezes, however i have found a solution! :). It seems the 8.10 ships with 0.14beta1 at76 driver which is very old. The newer 0.17 works really well on 8.10 with a patch, see link.
