Testing performed with the following environment:
    Intel Celeron 1.2GHz
    512M Ram
    nVidia MX 400 64MB
    Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex

I found that setting anti-aliasing to off resulted in the font
corruption you describe and setting it to any of the other setting
stopped the corruption.

Font corruption was evident with language set to both English and
German, with and without MSCorefonts installed and selected.

I tried installing the system in two different ways with the following
results.

Default install
No font corruption with either anti-aliasing on or off.
Then install 96.43.09 drivers and reboot
System comes up with compiz, font corruption apparent when ani-alaising turned
off
Then do system update, reboot.
System still has font corruption issues with no anti-alaising but in addition
to that window decorator has issues with compiz enabled in addition to assorted
other font rendering issues.

Default install
No font corruption with either anti-aliasing on or off.
Then install updates
Then install 96.43.09 drivers and reboot
System comes up with compiz, font corruption apparent when ani-alaising turned
off, window decorator functioning properly with compiz.

Putting Option "RenderAccel" "0" in the Screen section of xorg.conf
didn't help at all.

@RagTimE - I notice in your screenshots that you have the font
corruption with antialiasing on, have you tried antialiasing in
different modes? Are you able to try one of your MX400 based systems
with a clean install?
