Same problem with Intrepid and an ethernet controller by Broadcom (BCM5787M) trying to connect to a LAN. Same solution, removing the Network Manager. In Dustin's particular case the problem may be related with the 802.11b/g misunderstanding, but in general Ii seems to be a Network Manager problem and related to wired interfaces too..
