It's definitely not just a positioning thing - moving the keyboard
around can cause the keyboard to stop working, but never to start. The
ctrl-alt thing happens even if the keyboard is on a flat, unmoving
surface like the floor, and it doesn't work with similar key patterns
such as ctrl-shift.

I've noticed that holding down ctrl and alt will bring the focus
rectangles back, but they generally disappear as soon as the keys are
released. Do X and/or the kernel treat that combination specially?

Is there anything else I could provide test to help to solve this
problem? On good days, this is annoying; on bad days, it makes the
computer unusable.
