Same problem here, but maybe I found something.

First, HW/SW description:
Dell m1330
Ubuntu 8.10
kernel 2.6.27-9-generic
wifi driver iwlagn
wifi card Intel PRO Wireless 4965

As the others, no problem in Hardy, crashes after update to Intrepid.
Installed linux-backports-modules-intrepid and everything got working
fine.

Now, yesterday to test another Dell laptop (with broadcom wifi card and
lots of other problems) I changed my router's WLAN mode from "108 MBit/s
automatic" to "g and b". After dong that, today I got four of five
crashes (as described above: caps and num lock blinking, switch-off
needed). Then I set back the mode to "108 MBit/s automatic" and I'm
online since hours without crashes.

This may explain why in the hotel described above with some routers it
crashes with others not. It may depend on router config.

Hope this helps.
